THE CALL OF DISTANT SHORES

The island of Newfoundland, located in the North Atlantic, the most easterly point in North America, is a geologically and culturally unique place that continues to call people to its shores. Here you can see the evidence of 5,000 years of human settlement; the aboriginal cultures of Groswater and Dorset Paleo-Eskimos, the Maritime Archaic and the ancestors of the Beothuk.
The indigenous people and later European settlers found a rich bounty of natural resources on the land and in the sea. Newfoundland has been a landing place for Europeans seeking freedom and a New World; the Vikings and John Cabot are among the most well known early European explorers. Pioneering spirits and a desire for a new beginning, for a new life drew many from Ireland, Scotland, England, France and Portugal. No matter where they come from, people who arrive here feel an inexplicable deep connection to the landscape and it’s peoples.
What is it that calls people here? 250 Million years ago Newfoundland was at the center of the landmass of the Earth, a supercontinent called Pangaea. The theory of plate tectonics began here as scientists pieced together the picture of how continents collided and separated over millions of years. The island of Newfoundland contains evidence of these changes and the geologic and cultural connections with Europe, Africa and South America.
The spectacular landscape tells the story of the Earth’s transformation. Gros Morne National Park has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of exceptional natural beauty and outstanding evidence of the major stages of Earth's history.
The rocks and geologic formations exposed here rank Newfoundland among our planet’s most significant natural areas. Ancient mountains, diverse habitats, plant and animal life, seascapes and a unique human legacy make this a special place you must experience for yourself.
